Collaborating with a few colleagues, we created a way to encourage people to exercise more over taking the elevators. To do this, we created a magical experience by having a light beam follow alongside people using the stairs.
Using light to attract people, the playful solution involved using LED strips with an Arduino to process user data. IR sensors measured if a person was present and how far they were from the sensor itself. This data was transmitted to the Arduino to correlate to a segment of the LED strip and create the effect.
In one week’s time, nearly 15% more people used the stairs simply because it was a more joyful and curious experience.
The use of responsive light to movement makes people happy.
It gives immediate feedback to the motion they create.
